The long awaited System for Award Management was launched this week, changing the way contractors do business with the Federal Government. Formerly, vendors were required to register with CCR and ORCA prior to being eligible for federal contracts. Now, their registration has been streamlined into a single location – SAM! Future updates will integrate other resources you use into SAM as well.
To help contractors understand the changes, we’ve listed a brief overview of the changes and SAM’s functionality below.
Under the legacy systems, contractors were required to create and keep track of multiple logins for several different websites. With SAM, all these systems will be combined into a single resource with a single username and password. Currently, CCR and ORCA have been integrated into SAM. Other services such as FBO will be integrated in future updates.
No Duplicated Data
With separate websites and poorly designed integration between databases, contractors previously were required to enter the same data into different resources. This was tedious and created opportunities for mistakes and conflicting information. Additionally, if the data needed to be updated, vendors would have to remember to go to each separate website to update the same information. Now under SAM, data will only need to submitted one time.
Once all nine federal procurement systems are integrated into SAM, the cost to the federal government and taxpayers to maintain these systems will be significantly lower. Since there will be a single resource to access rather than nine, federal employees dealing with these procurement systems should also be able to perform their job much more efficiently, producing additional savings.
How to Use SAM
In order to use the new system, contractors will need to create a new SAM account and login. Even if you were previously registered with CCR, you will need to create an account with SAM, your previous login details will not work on the new site.
To create a personal account with SAM, click the “Create an Account” link in the upper left corner of the SAM website. You will be asked for some information, such as your name, address, phone number, and email address, and then you will be prompted to create a username, password, and set up security questions. Once you have submitted all this information, you will need to verify your email address before you may begin using SAM. Simply click the link in the email they send to you (be sure to check your spam/junk mail folder for this email!) and you are ready to either register for the first time or migrate your legacy CCR to SAM!
